I work Monday to Saturday which contain various daytime and evening tutor sessions (please contact me for further details) .
I am able to support pupils receiving Pupil Premium Plus and am happy to talk to your child's SENco regarding this.
We all learn in different ways and following a short standardised assessment I will build a learning programme using teaching resources and techniques suited to the learner. Individual learners respond to different strategies and this will become evident as I work with you / your child which will enable me to tailor the learning programme to suit needs / learning style.
The assessment usually takes approximately 90 minutes. Through a series of activities I am able to assess spelling, reading, writing, verbal memory and verbal processing. This enables me to pinpoint the areas of learning that are needed and ensures that areas of strength are not being re-learnt unnecessarily.
Literacy 1:1 Lesson
I have a varied schedule of teaching to ensure that there are appointments to suit all. It may be possible to arrange with your childs school for tutoring to take place during the school day (please contact me to discuss).
The first lesson will be a consultation and assessment of needs in order to plan a specific learning programme. All lessons are planned in 6 week blocks.
I am happy to meet with you / your child prior to assessment for an informal chat as the relationships we develop will be extremely important in your / your childs learning journey.
A typical lesson...
Lessons are structured to encourage the learner to lead their own learning. Providing the learner with opportunities to take ownership of their learning and use visual cues to help them remember strategies or self-checking their own work will also encourage a rise in their self-esteem and confidence.
The environment is relaxed and friendly with a emphasis on making learning fun. A variety of learning techniques are used to ensure that it is multisensory, providing cues for memory and recall.
It is usual that each lesson will contain a revision section of the previous weeks learning, a discovery section which introduces new learning points and a reinforcement section to practise the new learning points. Each section contains small activites to ensure that attention remains focused and a variety of multisensory methods are used.
The learner will build up a collection of cue cards which are personal to them and contain visual memory cues to link which link to memory of learning points we cover. These are practised and used in lessons / work to support independent working until automaticity is achieved.
Dyscalculia - Mathematics 1:1 Lessons
An assessment of knowledge is also required for mathematics to ensure that I plan lessons to target yours / your childs individuals needs.
Multisensory teaching is key in providing links to learning for learners with Dyscalculia or low mathematical skills. This means that learners will use sight, touch and sound to learn new strategies and create a visual representation card to use as a revision technique to support the learning point.
I use various techniques including numicon, singapore maths and nessy maths along with many other activities that are suited to the learner and promote engagement with the lesson.
Similarly to the literacy lesson, the structure contains a revision section, discovery section and a reinforcement section to promote their understanding and linking back to previous learning.
Please note that some learning points may take longer to secure in memory than others and requires patience, support and practise.
